London Road Fire Station – Uncovering History

On This Day – 4th August 1946

Working on historic buildings often reveals unexpected stories and our latest discovery at London Road Fire Station is a perfect example.

During ongoing works, our site team uncovered a collection of old newspaper clippings that had been used as packing material back in the 1940’s. What initially appeared to be discarded paper soon proved to be something far more significant.

After carrying out some research we discovered that one of the clippings featured "Spotlight on Sport" by renowned sports journalist Ivan Sharpe originated from the Sunday Chronicle, dated 4th August 1946.

The Sunday Chronicle was a British weekly newspaper founded in Manchester in August 1885 by the influential publisher Edward Hulton. Deeply connected to Manchester's thriving Victorian print industry, it was produced at the Hulton family's Withy Grove printing works, once one of the largest newspaper printing houses in the world.

Finding a newspaper that has remained hidden within the fabric of the building for almost 80 years is a remarkable reminder of the history contained within the very walls of London Road Fire Station. Like opening a time capsule, discoveries such as this offer a fascinating glimpse into everyday life from another era and strengthen our connection to the people who lived and worked there before us.

Our site team carefully removed the newspaper ensuring it could be preserved with the care and respect it deserves.
