ABC Solardome

Amspec worked on behalf of OBI Property for Allied London Quay House Developments to create an outdoor events space on the roof of the ABC Buildings in Manchester.

The ABC Buildings are a unique cluster of three buildings, designed to create opportunities for growth for film, TV and tech companies. The spirit of the 1960's expands the whole workspace, creating a timeless working environment, inspiring growth from an age that was truly revolutionary.

The ABC roof deck consists of a 175 sqm, 8m high glass dome structure, new composite decking area sat on an aluminium frame and other landscaping details to create an impressive outdoor space that utilises its city centre rooftop location. 

The pictures show, the setting out, forming and installation of a new concrete ring beam which provides a base for the glass dome structure to sit on. We co-ordinated and managed all permits & traffic management systems to allow for a large concrete pump vehicle to carry out the pour which forms the new ring beam.

We also suspended Airstream caravan style units via a crane. A bespoke lifting cradle was designed and manufactured to ensure a safe lift was achieved to the rooftop decking, where the caravans now sit.

Other works included; Reinstatement of Bauder Reinforced bitumen system to new ring beam upstand, roofing, fire alarm, lighting, data & networking and a platform lift installation. We also designed a bespoke weighted composite decking system on an aluminium frame as mechanical fixings could not be used on the existing roof membrane.

Natural daylighting assists with solar gain and provides natural heating to the space.

The all-year round ABC Roofdeck & Dome will provide a unique event space for social events such as live music, pop-up markets, corporate events & parties, food festivals, comedy shows and much more.
