Ashworth Hospital
Amspec were appointed by NHS Merseycare to deliver the full refurbishment of the Kennet Store Outbuilding at Ashworth High Security Hospital in Maghull. The project was part of a broader initiative to modernise and improve estate facilities across the NHS property portfolio, with a particular focus on creating secure, functional and sustainable spaces tailored to clinical and operational needs.
The Kennet Store Outbuilding had not seen significant investment for several years and required a comprehensive upgrade. Our remit was to renovate the structure both internally and externally, addressing its outdated infrastructure while enhancing its long-term usability. The refurbishment aimed to futureproof the building for NHS use, ensuring it complied with current regulations and standards.
Scope of Works
Our team began with a complete strip-out of the existing internal layout, services and fixtures, allowing for a clean slate from which to rebuild. This included the removal and safe disposal of all mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, which were no longer fit for purpose. We then installed entirely new M&E services throughout, incorporating modern systems to ensure improved energy efficiency and compliance with contemporary NHS specifications.
Externally, the building underwent a full overhaul. The roofing system was replaced in its entirety, providing a robust waterproofing solution designed to offer longevity and low maintenance. We carried out necessary structural repairs and exterior upgrades, improving both durability and appearance. Groundworks were modified to provide level access, enhancing accessibility and ensuring the building could be used safely and easily by all.
Internal Reconfiguration
Inside, the layout was reconfigured in line with updated structural calculations and planning directives. This included the installation of partitions, finishes, and tailored joinery solutions to meet the operational needs of the end users. The internal spaces were designed for maximum functionality, combining practicality with a clean, professional aesthetic. Every element—from flooring and lighting to walls and ceilings—was carefully specified and installed to meet healthcare standards.
