Whispering Smith, Deansgate

Whispering Smith are a wholesale clothing brand that offers high-quality apparel for both men and women. They are the UK’s largest importer, wholesaler and distributor of fashion clothing and a global leader in design, production and delivery.

Founded by Lal Kumar in Manchester, 1967, the company has grown from Chorlton Market to a city centre head office and a 500,000 sq ft warehouse. Lead by the third generation, Rohina (Creative Director) and Rohil (Managing Director) they now have showrooms & design studios in London, New York and Madrid. 

Earlier this year, Amspec were asked on behalf of Interior Designers, Sheila Bird Studio, to fit out 5 floors of office space to transform 274 Deansgate into Whispering Smith’s new HQ.

In the reception, we supplied and installed a timber slatted feature wall which displayed hanging ivy. We manufactured a bespoke, DDA compliant reception desk with ceramic tiles and feature LED lighting. Another notable feature included a wall with 3D facelit illuminated lettering, showcasing the branding of Whispering Smith.

New teapoints and furniture were installed in the ground and first-floor breakout areas. A central poseur table, manufactured by Amspec, featured a suspended black powder-coated steel raft designed to hold artificial ivy, creating a focal point in each of the rooms.

Open-plan offices were constructed on the first floor. To address noise concerns, we installed acoustic panels within the meeting rooms to minimise sound disturbance. Additionally, for privacy purposes, frosted manifestations were applied to the glazed partitions. Furthermore, we constructed full-height media walls with integrated TV units to enhance functionality and aesthetics.

The second and third floors were similarly designed as open-plan spaces, incorporating double-height racking systems securely fastened to both the floor and ceiling. On the third floor, we developed a 'brand lab,' which featured a panel mounted to a wall to allow space for pinning work and displaying fabric samples.

Other works included a full strip out, internal walls, installation of doors, flooring and ceiling finishes, decoration, installation of FF&E, W.C's and all M&E.
